Tackling dependency head on

February 17, 2012 · Filed Under Health

Entering rehab can be a daunting experience but it is one in which you will never be alone. Dependency is something that no solider, or indeed person, is immune to. Trauma is a known trigger for addictive type behaviours and is an issue close to many former and current soldiers. At ParentsZone.org we encounter the same obstacle in these cases time and time again: the fear of stigma. Soldiers and families feel that honesty over their habits might lead to negative evaluation or judgement and therefore conduct themselves entirely in private. Openness and sharing are crucial to the healing process and so we actively encourage anyone developing dependency to confide in a close or trusted friend/relative as soon as possible.

Treatment is available and constant advances in care mean that you are more likely than ever to make a complete recovery. Day-to-day struggles can feel overpowering but by embracing support it is possible to turn a new page. It is never worth sacrificing health and relationships for a vice. If dependency is allowed to spiral out of control, short term problems can become long-term and potentially life threatening problems. The body has remarkable resilience and capacity to recover but there is only so much it can take. Seeking help before it is too late is the best way to ensure your long term wellbeing. But it is not a purely individual matter.

It is loved ones who take on an enormous burden in many cases of dependency. If it is difficult to muster the strength and motivation purely for the sake of your own wellbeing, then try to be inspired by loved ones. Relationships are the single most salient and important thing in most of our lives, it is never worth giving up friends and family for an addictive problem. Know Where to go for help Today and make today the day that you tackle dependency head on. It takes a clear mind to fully support the people around us and crucially, it is never too late to make a change. Many people feel that long term problems are so engrained they can no longer be changed, but evidence shows that this is not necessarily true. There is always hope, and with it hopes for a better future. If you or a loved one is experiencing dependency then seek help today before it’s too late! No matter how far down the line of addiction you are, there are resources and help mechanisms available to help you turn things around.
